Trans Story(s)
From the Weimar Republic, National Socialism and the GDR
In teachings of history(s) from the Weimar Republic, National Socialism and the GDR, trans people are rarely mentioned. In fact, however, an unimagined variety of documents is dormant in the archives. Many of these documents are not written by people who have been affected by transphobia themselves. Rather they show the persecution of people who, at their time and place, have been categorized as gender non-conforming, such as police reports and medical records. However, some, such as letters, offer a very personal insight into the self-identification of queer people and the experiences that connected them with their gender identity. This lecture is an introduction to German Trans History of the 20th century from the Weimar Republic, through National Socialism to the post-war period in the GDR. Historical examples are used to show how people, who today might have called themselves „trans“, were treated and how they identified themselves.
Kai* Brust:
Kai* Brust describes themselves as a “theirstorian” (instead of historian) and is studying the Master’s degree in Interdisciplinary Research on Antisemitism at the Tecnical University of Berlin. Their research focuses on the attribution of gender non-conformity as a tool for persecution under National Socialism and the intersection of anti-semitism and the hostility against queers at that time. Kai* completed their bachelor’s degree in history and political science at the Techinical University of Darmstadt. They also worked for three months at the Transgender Archive (University of Victoria, BC/Canada).

Лектор_ки: Каи* Бруст
